What is it?

Sun damage is a cumulative process and often appears many years after your golden tan or painful sunburn fades. Sun damage manifests itself in the skin in the form of wrinkles, brown spots, and visible blood vessels (called telangiectasia). Many adults want to reverse the damage caused by hours spent outdoors under the sun. An intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacial at the Houston practice of SBA Dermatology & Plastic Surgery can help your skin look more youthful and radiant.

Your Beautiful Skin

At our cosmetic centers in Houston, the photofacial is one of our most popular choices, as demonstrated by the fact that we've performed over 15,000 of these treatments since we introduced our original IPL facial treatment in 1997. Because the light energy is absorbed by areas with increased pigmentation and telangiectasia, IPL effectively eliminates skin discoloration (like freckles and sun spots) and reduces redness. The light energy also stimulates collagen production in the skin, which helps smooth fine wrinkles and improve skin tone.

For optimal results, we recommend a series of 5 photofacial treatments, spaced 3 weeks apart. We apply a topical anesthetic cream an hour before your treatment, which then takes about 30 minutes to complete. While the skin will appear flushed right after treatment, the redness will fade within a few hours. Brown spots often darken initially before flaking off.

Our Signature photofacial treatment includes a vibradermabrasion pre-treatment that removes dead skin cells improving the skin's appearance and allowing better penetration of the IPL. Collagen production is further enhanced with a GentleWaves® treatment after the photofacial. Patients who desire greater wrinkle improvement might consider the PhotoFirm™ treatment.
