IMPLANT OPTIONS
During your consultation with Dr. Couvillion, we choose your breast implants based on your body size and shape. Implants are made in different shapes, sizes, profiles, and textures — all of which are considered to achieve your aesthetic goals. Implant options include silicone or saline, both widely popular and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Patients considering saline implants must be at least 18 years old, while patients must be at least 22 years old for silicone. We only use smooth, round implants.
SHAPE
Breast implants are made in either a teardrop or round shape. While both shapes are widely used in breast augmentation patients, we only use round implants. Teardrop implants require a textured outer covering which can be associated with some specific issues, so Dr. Couvillion chooses to avoid that altogether. The implants we use add natural fullness to the upper breast while providing a nice curve to the lower breast.
SIZE
Breast implant come in sizes based on the cubic centimeters (CCs) of saline or silicone they contain. To help pick your implants, Dr. Couvillion will assess your natural breast tissue and body frame. Then, using a sizing system in the office, he will help guide you through the process of picking your personalized implant volume. Ultimately, you are the one who decides on the implants that you're going to have! An important part of our process is that the choice is yours and no-one else's so there are no surprises.
PROFILE
Implant profile refers to how far the implants project from your chest. In other words, the breast profile is what someone sees when looking at your breasts from the side. Projection varies by implant type and there are multiple options. A personalized discussion with Dr. Couvillion will determine which is right for you.
AM I AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION?
The decision to have breast augmentation is personal. If you're contemplating surgery, it's important to do it for the right reasons. The best candidates for this procedure are seeking improvements rather than perfection. If you're unhappy with the size of your breasts because they appear small or asymmetrical, you may benefit from breast augmentation. Patients may also have surgery if their breast appearance changed due to recent weight loss or pregnancy. Patients should also be at an appropriate age and in good general health.
WHAT TO EXPECT WITH BREAST AUGMENTATION?
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. We use a rapid recovery medication schedule that avoids narcotics and all of their side effects. This gets you back to your normal everyday activities fast.
You need to arrange for someone to drive you home after anesthesia. You also need an adult to be with you for the first 24 hours after surgery. Expect to wear a supportive non-underwire sports bra to reduce post-surgery swelling. As swelling and inflammation decline, your new breasts will begin to look and feel like your new normal.
Patients can return to everyday activities within the first week after breast augmentation. However, strenuous exercises and heavy lifting should be avoided for about 6 weeks. Our clinic can provide you with more detailed information about recovery during your initial assessment.
WHAT INCISION TYPES DO YOU USE DURING BREAST AUGMENTATION?
Dr. Couvillion usually makes an incision in the fold underneath the breast. This incision has the lowest risk of both short and long-term complications. The implants may be placed under the pectoral muscle or behind the breast tissue but over the pectoral muscle. This decision is made based on your anatomy and preferences. We then insert the implants through the incision which is generally about 1.5 inches long. Our staff will provide you with recovery instructions that will help your scars slowly fade away over time.
BREAST AUGMENTATION FAQS
How much does breast augmentation cost?
The total cost for breast augmentation surgery varies based on your implant choices and whether you are having any other procedures at the same time. Once your treatment plan is created, Dr. Couvillion's staff will review estimated costs and financing options.
Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your treatment plan might include implants, a breast lift, or both. Breast lift surgery removes excessive skin (and sometimes breast tissue) then re-positions the nipple to an appropriate position for the new shape and size. Breast implants are strategically placed to enhance breast shape and size. Sometimes we combine both implants and a lift at the same time, which is called an Augmentation Mastopexy. Our team will listen to your concerns and goals before discussing the best treatment options. An augmentation and lift may be necessary to revitalize the breasts after breastfeeding and pregnancy, but it all depends on your end goal and current anatomy.
Can I breastfeed with implants?
Talk to Dr. Couvillion if you you're interested in breastfeeding after breast augmentation. In general, the incisions we make in the fold under the breast don't cut into the breast tissue or glands, which means breastfeeding should not be affected.
Can I have my implants removed?
You might decide at some point that you want to remove or replace your implants. Dr. Couvillion does offer breast revision surgery if this is the case. If your implants are removed, you might want to have a breast lift to keep your breast appearance perky and full.
